National Geographic-Up Inspired Floating House

Yesterday morning, March 5 at dawn, National Geographic Channel and a team of scientists, engineers, and two world-class balloon pilots successfully launched a 16′ X 16′ house 18′ tall with 300 8′ colored weather balloons from a private airfield east of Los Angeles, and set a new world record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted. The entire experimental aircraft was more than 10 stories high, reached an altitude of over 10,000 feet, and flew for approximately one hour.

The filming of the event, from a private airstrip, will be part of a new National Geographic Channel series called How Hard Can it Be?, which will premiere in fall 2011.

Watercolour Exhibition at the TATE

Go visit the “Watercolour” exhibition at the TATE Britain curated by Alison Smith.

Our show aims to reveal the extraordinary and varied, if uneven history of watercolour through the centuries. Historically, the practice of watercolour has often been seen as a means to an end – done for practical purposes, such as botanical illustration, topographical depiction or as designs. However, as it evolved, it became a medium in its own right, and watercolours were soon prized for their colours, fluidity and translucent qualities.

Also:
An extraordinary watercolour exhibition opens at Tate Britain tomorrow, 16 February. As Assistant Curator of the show, I’m really excited to see such a vast selection of watercolours on display – from early uses of the medium such as an illuminated manuscript from the 13th century, to modern and contemporary works by Patrick Heron, Tracey Emin and
Anish Kapoor.

Alexander McQueen Retrospective @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Guardian says: The work of Alexander McQueen, who died in last year, is to be the subject of an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A preview of the show, which will run 4 May to 31 July 2011, was unveiled at the Ritz as part of London fashion week. The US exhibition will feature more than 100 pieces of work from McQueen’s 19-year career.

The Metropolitan Museum says: The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute, will celebrate the late Alexander McQueen’s extraordinary contributions to fashion. From his postgraduate collection of 1992 to his final runway presentation which took place after his death in February 2010, Mr. McQueen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility to a conceptual expression of culture, politics, and identity. His iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion. Approximately one hundred examples will be on view, including signature designs such as the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat, as well as pieces reflecting the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s that he crafted into contemporary silhouettes transmitting romantic narratives. Technical ingenuity imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at fashion’s vanguard.

Banksy for Greenpeace

A Bonham’s auction house employee poses for photographers in front of ‘Save or delete Jungle Book’ by British Artist Banksy in London. The piece is expected to sell for between £60,000- £80,000 pounds (93,000 to 124,000 US dollars) at Bonhams forthcoming ‘Urban Art’ auction. REUTERS/Paul Hackett.

ArtDaily says: LONDON.- An original art work by the legendary street artist, Banksy, for a Greenpeace Save or Delete campaign photographic poster, is to be sold at Bonhams, New Bond Street, as part of its Urban Art sale on 11 January 2011. Estimated at £60,000 – 80,000, the unique piece (lot 67) was given to the vendor by the artist himself.

The art work was commissioned by Greenpeace to highlight the problems of global deforestation as part of their Save or Delete campaign. The image, which features some of the main characters from Disney’s The Jungle Book transposed onto a picture of a devastated forest, was intended for use on posters, billboards and postcards. While it was printed, it was never put into circulation because of the protectionist policies at Disney. A version of this poster is illustrated in Banksy’s Wall and Piece book.

It’s for a noble cause!
